1956-57 Arrival of Freddie
Cox as manager, bringing a new brand of football to the club. Keen on
youth development, Cox was also a firm believer in open, attacking
football. The team had a tremendous F.A.Cup run, beating Wolves 1-0 in
the 4th round, Spurs 3-1 in the 5th round at Dean Court and played the
famous Busby Babes of Manchester United in the 6th round at Dean Court
in front of a new record crowd of 28,799, unfortunately losing 2-1. As a
result the club was awarded the Sunday Pictorial 'Giant Killers up' |

1956-57 The Supporters Club was founded
1957-58 The Football League formed the Fourth Division, though Bournemouth stayed in 3rd Division as a result of their 9th place finish the year before.
1957-58 Freddie Cox left to manage 1st Division Portsmouth
1961-62 Narrowly missed promotion to the 2nd Division by a mere 3 points
1962-63 Year of the 'big freeze' in which nine weeks
passed without football due to the
weather. Finished in 5th place
1965-66 Freddie Cox returned as manager. The
team, however, came close
to relegation
1969-70
Signed Ted MacDougall (right) from York City but nevertheless were relegated to the 4th Division
1970-71 John Bond replaced Freddie Cox as manager. MacDougall set F.A. Cup scoring record (6) in an 8-1 victory over non-league Oxford City. The club won promotion to the 3rd Division
1971-72 AFCB and Ted MacDougall made National news headlines with AFCB winning 11-0 at home to Margate in the F.A.Cup with MacDougall scoring 9 goals - (A new record)
1972-73 MacDougall was sold to Manchester United for 200,000 pounds and the team again narrowly missed promotion

1973-74 John Bond left for Norwich City. A huge player turnover followed and the team finished well down the table
1974-75 Relegated to the 4th Division
1978-79 The return of Ted MacDougall on a free transfer from Southampton. Alec Stock replaced John Benson as manager. Bournemouth won 7-1 against Doncaster in his first game as manager - their best win in 22 years. However, they eventually finished 18th in their division
1979-80 MacDougall left to become assistant manager at Blackpool
1980-81 David Webb became player-manager
1981-82 Finished season with 17 unbeaten games to
finish 4th and win promotion to the 3rd Div. |

1982-83 Webb dismissed and replaced by caretaker-manager Harry Redknapp until Don Megson was named manager. The team finished in 14th place in their first season back in the 3rd Division. A notable occurrence was by the appearance of the legendary George Best
in the No7 shirt, a crowd of 9000 turned up to see the legend (left) he
played a further five games at the end of that season.
1983-84 A bad start to the season saw Megson resign and Redknapp take over as manager again. Though they beat Manchester United 2-0 in
the 3rd round of the F.A.Cup, they could only manage a 17th place finish in the League. |

1985-86
Striker Colin Clarke played for Northern Ireland in the 1986
World Cup
1986-87 Division 3 champions and promoted to the Second Division
1992-93 Appeared in the first live televised FA Cup penalty shootout, against Newcastle. With the score 2-2 after extra time, Bournemouth finally won on penalty kicks.
1996-97 Hard times saw the team go into receivership and almost cease operations. They were saved through a huge community effort which led to the formation of AFC Bournemouth Community Club, the first community-owned professional football team in Europe.
1997-98 AFC Bournemouth's first visit to Wembley on April 19th resulted in an extra-time 1-2 defeat at the hands of Grimsby in front of a crowd of 65,000 in the AWS Final.
1998-99 A disappointing end to a promising season saw the team finish in seventh place, just out of the playoff picture.
2000-01 End of an era, when the South End was closed for demolition and made way for the new Stadium

Jermaine Defoe (on loan from West Ham) equals Post War Record by scoring Ten goals in Ten games.
2000-01 Last game at Dean Court 28th April 2001 Bt Northampton 2-0.

2002-03 Cherries reached
the 3rd Division Playoffs after beating Bury 3-1 at Fitness First Stadium
2002-03 Cherries beat Lincoln City 5-2 in the 3rd Division playoff Final at the
Millennium Stadium Cardiff.
Cherries are the first team to score five goals in a playoff Final, also a record crowd of 32,500 for the 3rd Division
playoffs.
